A Cockapoo Rescue Makes a Great Family Dog

Cross breeding has become popular over the years because this effort usually produces a genetically healthier dog. First developed around 1950, cockapoos are a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle, usually a miniature sized or smaller. If you are considering a cockapoo rescue, you will be gaining a loyal and intelligent companion. They are people oriented dogs, suitable for either a single-person home or a family with children. They are a good choice for seniors because they are relatively easy to care for. But watch out for jealously; they might become so attached to you that if you are paying attention to something or someone else, they might show you their displeasure.

Cockapoos tend to have the ears of a spaniel and the coat and face of a poodle. The original intention was to combine the outgoing, loving nature of the cocker spaniel with the low shedding and low dander of the poodle. Some dogs are bred using a spaniel and a poodle, while others are bred cockapoo to cockapoo. Cockapoos come in various sizes, either teacup, toy, miniature or standard. They also come in a variety of colors with any number of different markings. And their coats are varied as well; some are wavy while others are course and curly. Your cockapoo rescue dog may shed, while other cockapoos won’t. Yet another variation is their energy level; some are very active while others only need their daily walk. Although you never know quite what you’ll get with a cockapoo, there are traits that are certain, however. They are clean and odorless dogs that are curious, trainable and eager to perform.

Even though cross breeding tends to eliminate the genetic problems common to certain breeds, the cockapoo suffers from loose knees, as did its forefathers. Any cockapoo rescue organization will caution you to regularly clean their ears, because those long, floppy ears are prone to infection. Eye problems are also common with this breed, so watch for any signs of change.

Since the cockapoo has become a popular breed, there are many organizations dedicated to their care and rescue. One cockapoo rescue organization will adopt their dogs worldwide. Another rescue organization cares for any type of doodle (a poodle bred with any other dog). When you adopt a cockapoo, it will already be spayed or neutered, as rescue organizations know this is the only way to address our pet overpopulation problem. Each organization’s purpose is to find the dogs in their care a loving, accepting home—perhaps a home like yours.
