Cockapoo Breeders Work Toward a Dominant Breed
In 1950, dog breeders mixed an English Cocker Spaniel or American Cocker Spaniel with a Poodle (in most cases using a miniature or toy). This created the breed now referred to as a Cockapoo. The earliest written reference was noted in 1960. However, this breed did not become popular until 1970. Cockapoo breeders created a breed that is stronger than their respective parents. Generally speaking when you crossbreed two dominant breeds the strongest traits will surface. The crossbred dogs will have a longer life expectancy and will not suffer from the same aliments as their parents.
Since the Cockapoo is not a purebred dog, there is no regulation on the percentage of each breed involved in each mixture. Not all Cockapoo breeders will design hybrid dogs that are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for them to use a multi generation cross. This is why Cockapoo clubs are trying to make the Cockapoo a purebred dog by multi generation crossing. However, some Cockapoo breeders want to continue with the basic Poodle Cocker mix. They have stated that they want to preserve the heterosis effect in the hybrid mix.
Cockapoo breeders describe this breed temperament as loving, energetic with a sweet nature. They make wonderfully affectionate and devoted pets. They are known for being intelligent and alert. They are eager to please and therefore, easy to train. They are very non destructive. They will thrive when they receive regular exercise, and they love to play whenever possible. Cockapoo’s make ideal pets and are very companion friendly. Because of their smart, loyal and mellow nature they are excellent with children of all ages. As a breed, they adapt well with families, and make great company for senior citizens.
Cockapoo breeders recommend that you brush their coats at least once a week. Making certain you clean their eyes and keep their ears clean. This makes the Cockapoo breed very low maintenance. Anyone wanting a low shedding, no to low odor, highly intelligent and mellow pet that is easy to train a Cockapoo will be a perfect choice for you. If you live in a modest apartment, as long as they receive their daily walks, a Cockapoo will adapt well to living in small spaces.
